Sculptor Angel Orensanz moved this Spring to Zaragoza (Northern Spain) to quietly work on a three part series sculpture project coinciding with the resurgence of the capital ofAragon into the forefront of Europe. This art project consists of a three part series: “The Sphere of Zaragoza”; “ The Origins of Labor” and “Time and Space”. The first piece is a 3 and ˝ diameter sphere in stainless steel installed at the entrance of the recent WTCZ complex, after a parade through the center of the city, followed by a clamoring crowd. The second piece is a large, gleaming white relief in fiberglass “The Origins of Labor”, 5 meters high and 8 meters long, visually rooted on old iconographies that narrate the struggles of ancient generations in search of water. The piece, already finished, will be installed early this Summer in the banks of the Canal Imperial de Aragon, in the outskirts of the city. The third art piece is a large, transparent steel piece, just erected inside of the soaring new airport of Zaragoza. Zaragoza (Caesar Augusta) is a two thousand year old Roman city, erected to celebrate Emperor Caesar Augustus’ Pax Hispanica. Zaragoza, as the capital ofAragon, is right now reinventing itself as a major player in the current Spanish and European expansion, and in the world affairs. Its past includes a centuries old thriving metropolis of complementing Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures. At this very moment is celebrating a world water exhibition and is laying the grounds for a Las Vegas type of world entertainment hub. Angel Orensanz fascination with the sphere has developed over the years. “It is the most universal concept in human culture, from Parmenides to Einstein. This one in steel is a final version of a transparent one that I built in New York, and rolled down Fifth Avenue, from the Metropolitan Museum to City Hall to mourn the tragic events of September 11. This sphere portrays a new world in constant transition and redefinition of itself”, he was telling during the parade on his way to the final destination. Just two weeks after, this past June 12, Angel Orensanz was attending the inaugural moment of his piece “Time and Space” at the recently opened new Airport of Zaragoza, a gateway to Europe and the world in consonance with the position that Zaragoza, as a city, and Aragon as a region and historic European power, are reclaiming in today’s European scene. This sculpture piece in vivid orange colors plays visually with the space crafts launching mythology in which speed and space fuse with each otherIn search of the cosmos. The third art piece is for the Canal Imperial de Aragon in the outskirts ofZaragoza. Thus connecting the surrounding development with a persistent theme of the search and management of the water resources. That has been the constant role of the Canal Imperial de Aragon for which this piece has been created. The Canal Imperial de Aragon has managed the water resources of the river Ebro since the 18th century. “Art channels pretty well the energies of people in any given moment; and can channel as well the energy of a land and of a people. “Aragon” is a Basque word that possibly means river in the mountains. I was born precisely in the Pyrenees, the original Aragon. Although now I live in Manhattan I feel the pull of the ancestry, of the land in times like these”, was commenting Angel Orensanz on his flight back to New York. Angel Orensanz: A Trilogy of   Aragon

New York, June 16, 2008. Sculptor Angel Orensanz moved this Spring to Zaragoza (Northern Spain) to quietly work on a three part series sculpture project coinciding with the resurgence of the capital of Aragon into the forefront  of   Europe.  This art project consists of a three part series: “The Sphere of Zaragoza”; “ The Origins of Labor” and “Time and Space”.

The first piece is a 3 and ½ diameter sphere in stainless steel installed at the entrance of the recent WTCZ complex, after a  parade through the center of  the  city, followed by a clamoring crowd.
